Description

A Departure – Lethbridge High Level Bridge Fine Art Print

Located just south of the Lethbridge High Level Bridge. A Departure is a striking art installation that many pass without noticing. Set against the backdrop of the iconic bridge at the top of the sweeping Oldman River Valley.  The sculpture takes on new life when framed by the right light and sky.

The scene is perfect. The sculpture in the foreground, the bridge rising in the distance. With a dramatic prairie sky overhead. The result is a composition that highlights both the artistry of human creation and the beauty of the natural world.

Printed on archival metallic photo paper. Finished with a fine leather-textured laminate, this piece radiates depth and brilliance. Designed to be displayed framed without glass. It preserves the vivid colors while presenting itself as a gallery-quality artwork for your home or office.

A Departure

Ilan Sandler, 2009

A Departure is a sculptural installation inspired by three types of locomotive wheels that have crossed the Alberta CPR High Level Bridge since its opening in 1909. The artwork invites viewers to reflect on the passage of time and the evolution of travel.

Each wheel frames a unique view of Lethbridge: the bridge itself, the Oldman River Valley, the Galt Museum, and the University of Lethbridge. Standing before the largest wheel, visitors can look through its spokes to glimpse its historic counterpart—like looking back in time. Positioned between the bridge and two steam engine wheels, one can see a twentieth-century wheel seemingly rolling forward, symbolizing movement into the future.

Commissioned to mark the 100th anniversary of the Lethbridge Viaduct (High Level Bridge), A Departure stands as a legacy artwork. It was made possible through funding from the City of Lethbridge Public Art Fund, the Bridge Celebration Fund, and the Heart of Our City Steering Committee.
