Description
Peyto Lake Banff National Park at the Edge of Winter
Early October in the Canadian Rockies can be a beautiful time of transition. Summer has not completely disappeared, but winter is beginning to make its presence known.
This photograph looks down upon Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, as the turquoise-blue water shimmers in the soft light of the early evening. A fresh dusting of snow has settled on the surrounding mountain peaks, providing a beautiful reminder that winter is just around the corner.
The mountains are partially hidden beneath the clouds left behind by the day’s rain and snow. On the right side of the photograph, north of the lake, a small opening in the clouds reveals a patch of light blue sky. The surrounding clouds appear to be slowly closing in on that last glimpse of summer blue, much like the approaching winter is beginning to overtake the warm, dry days that filled the valley only a few days earlier.
The contrast between the brilliant turquoise water, freshly snow-covered mountain peaks, dark forests and dramatic autumn clouds gives this Canadian Rockies landscape photograph a wonderful sense of depth and atmosphere. It isn’t simply a photograph of Peyto Lake; it captures a moment when the seasons are changing.
