In challenging weather conditions like a sudden snowstorm you can capture some of the most remarkable wildlife photos. I experienced this firsthand in Waterton Lakes National Park. A surprise early-season snowstorm swiftly enveloped the valley. It reduced visibility with a rapid descent of clouds, fog and falling snow.

Amidst this in-climate weather I was hiking and came across a group of short-eared owls. It seemed they were caught off guard while flying through the valley. With the encroaching clouds trapping them from all sides there was no escape for the owls from the storm. Much like other animals and people that day, they sought refuge. For this particular group, their sanctuary was the Blackiston fan.

Despite being waterlogged and seemingly disoriented, the owls showed no urgency to leave. One of them, captured in my photograph, conveyed a lot through its piercing gaze. The moisture in the air enhanced the vibrancy of colors in the image. Creating a unique and vivid composition.
